What does local SEO mean for a business in Chișinău?
Explained without jargon: how to appear on Google and on the map when clients search for your service — what you can do yourself for free, what paying costs, and why nobody can guarantee you first place.
Short answer
Local SEO means appearing on Google — on the map and in the results list — when someone in your area searches for the service you sell: "dentist Chișinău", "fridge repair Botanica". Google officially names three factors that decide local ranking — relevance, distance and prominence — and states plainly that a position can be neither bought nor guaranteed. The first step is free and you can do it yourself: the Google Business profile. If you pay someone, the retainers published in Chișinău are typically 300–1,400 EUR per month, and SEO effects — per Google’s own documentation — show in 4 months to a year. Below: the free checklist, the honest maths and the red flags.
What local SEO means, in the owner’s language
When someone searches "car service Ciocana", Google shows two things: at the top — the map with a few businesses (stars, hours, a call button), then — the usual list of websites. Local SEO is the work of appearing in both, for the searches that bring clients from your area. In Moldova, almost 9 out of 10 searches go through Google (StatCounter, July 2026), so "how I rank on Google" really means "how clients find me".
Google officially names the criteria it uses to pick local results — there are only three (the official Google Business help pages, support.google.com):
- Relevance — how well your profile matches what the person is searching for.
- Distance — how close you are to the person searching.
- Prominence — how well-known the business appears: including how many reviews it has and what they say. Google also states plainly that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.
Distance you cannot change, but the other two — you can. That is why local SEO is not "a trick only the agency knows", but concrete work on your profile, your website and your reviews. A serious part of it you can do yourself — next section.
What you can do yourself, for free, today
The list below costs no money — only a few hours. Every item comes from Google’s published recommendations, not from agency folklore:
- Create or claim your Google Business profile — it is free. Your business can appear on the map without you knowing (Google gathers public data); only by verifying the profile do you gain control over it.
- Fill in everything: services, hours, phone, address. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are easier to match with relevant searches.
- The profile name = your real business name. No "+ keywords + Chișinău" in the name — Google’s rules warn this can get the profile suspended.
- Choose few categories in the profile, as specific as possible — what your business IS, not everything it sells.
- Add real photos — work, premises, team — and keep the hours current, especially around holidays.
- Ask real clients for reviews and reply to all of them — including the bad ones. Bought reviews are a sure road to trouble.
- Name, address and phone identical everywhere — on the website, the profile, 999.md, social media. Google gathers data from everywhere; if it differs, it may show the wrong version.
- If an agency made your profile — go to business.google.com and check who the "primary owner" is. The profile must be on your Google account, not theirs; otherwise, when the contract ends, you lose the profile and the reviews with it. Ask for the ownership transfer in writing, while the collaboration is still on.
- If you have Russian-speaking clients too — write the profile description and posts in both languages (free). Separate Romanian and Russian pages on your website help as well, but that is no longer free — it is a criterion for your list when you order the website.
If someone sells you "Google profile management" as a monthly subscription before you have even filled it in once yourself — it is not time to pay. First do for free what can be done for free; only then does it become clear what is missing.
How long it takes and what it costs, with real numbers
This is where the market sells the most smoke, so we go by sources: Google says, in its official guide on hiring an SEO, that effects usually show in 4 months to a year. Even the agencies selling SEO in Moldova write, on their own offer pages, that first results appear in 2–6 months. Anyone promising results in a few weeks contradicts their own industry.
The prices Chișinău agencies themselves publish start from a few hundred euros per month — typically 300–1,400 EUR, sometimes with a 6-month minimum contract. We are not saying it is theft: in a niche with serious competition, real monthly work exists. We are only showing the maths for a small business: at 400 EUR per month, a year of retainer means 4,800 EUR — almost seven times the price of a business website from 700 EUR, paid once.
Our position — and yes, we have an interest here: we sell websites, not SEO retainers; keep that in mind as you read. The local SEO structure — correct titles, a page per service, plus the technical part Google reads (the site map and the data that tells it exactly what you sell) — comes included in the business website, indicatively from 700 EUR, once. For many small businesses in Chișinău, that foundation + a completed Google profile + real reviews covers the need. A monthly retainer makes sense only when you compete on crowded searches and someone answers for results — in enquiries and calls, not positions.
The red flags when buying SEO
Two quotes from Google’s documentation say the essence better than we could: "there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking" (the Google Business help pages) and "no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google" (Google Search Central). With that in mind, here is what is nevertheless sold on the market:
- Packages named after positions — "TOP 3", "TOP 10" — with "results guaranteed by contract". A local position can be neither requested nor bought — that is Google’s quote above, and no contract changes it.
- "Money back if you don’t grow in 3 months" — sounds like safety, but it is marketing on a term where, by the industry’s own numbers, results are only starting.
- A 6-month minimum contract with no clear explanation of what you get each month.
- Reports in positions and traffic, not enquiries — a healthy report answers one question: how many people called or wrote from Google this month?
- Phone calls "from Google" selling positions or scaring you that you will vanish from the map. Google does not sell local positions — its own documentation says so — and the Google Business profile is free. You can hang up in peace.
- Speed promises. Anyone promising the top in a few weeks contradicts the timelines the industry itself publishes — 2–6 months to first results. The same logic as "a website in 24 hours": the unrealistic promise is the signal, not the speed.
The question that separates serious offers from the rest: "How do we measure the result in clients, not positions?". Whoever has a concrete answer (tracked phone numbers, forms, monthly enquiries) works for your business. Whoever only shows you green charts works for the monthly invoice.
When paying for SEO is NOT worth it
The question no SEO offer ever asks — which is exactly why we ask it. It is not worth paying when:
- Nobody searches for your service on Google — for some businesses demand comes from referrals or social media. Check first: type your service plus your city into Google; if not even competitors show up with websites and dedicated pages, people may simply not search for it.
- You have one large client, or your clients are other companies with direct contracts — a well-kept presentation page is enough; monthly SEO will not bring your second large client.
- Your budget is under a few hundred euros per month — below the market’s published prices, a "cheap" retainer does not even cover the promised hours of work. Better an impeccable Google profile and real reviews.
- Your Google profile and referrals already bring as many clients as you can handle — then paid SEO solves a problem you do not have.
And if you do not have a website yet and wonder whether you need one at all, or whether a social media page with a Google profile is enough — we wrote a guide exactly about that:
FAQ
Questions about local SEO
01How do I get on the Google map, in the first results?
A verified and complete Google Business profile, a precise category, real reviews with replies, correct hours, photos. The map position cannot be bought — Google says so explicitly — but businesses with complete information are easier to match with searches. Distance to the person searching also matters, and nobody controls that.
02Can anyone guarantee me first place?
No. "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google" — not our opinion, but Google Search Central’s official documentation. What can be promised honestly: concrete work (profile, pages, reviews, speed) and monthly measurement in enquiries and calls. A ranking guarantee is the surest sign to look elsewhere.
03What does local SEO cost in Moldova?
The retainers local agencies publish start from a few hundred euros per month, typically 300–1,400 EUR. With us, the local SEO structure is included in the business website — indicatively from 700 EUR, paid once. For serious competition on valuable searches a monthly retainer can make sense — but only if what you get each month is written in black and white, and the result is measured in enquiries and calls.
04My clients speak Russian too — does it matter for Google?
Yes. At the 2024 census, almost a quarter of Chișinău residents named Russian as the language they usually speak. The search "ремонт холодильников Кишинёв" surfaces pages written in Russian — which is why a serious website for Chișinău has separate Romanian and Russian versions. And it is not about Yandex: Russian speakers in Moldova also search mostly on Google.
05How soon will I see results?
Google says 4 months to a year for SEO effects; even local agencies write 2–6 months for the first signs. The Google Business profile moves faster: once verified, you appear on the map — but where you appear still depends on relevance, distance and prominence, not on a promised deadline. That is why we always recommend the profile first: it is free.
06I already pay for SEO and get reports, but I see no new clients. What do I do?
Ask the agency for one thing next month: how many people called or wrote from Google this month — and how we know that. If the answer is a chart of positions rather than a number of enquiries, you have your answer. You have the right to ask for the list of concrete work done in every paid month — and not to renew the contract. Just check, before leaving, that the domain, the website and the Google profile are on your accounts.
